In 1519 the Spaniards probed the Gulf Coast and found a small fishing community settled by the Karankawa Indians. They called it "Sand Point" on "Wildhorse Island".
Eventually settled and colonized... the town of "Tarpon" emerged, known for great Tarpon fishing. Wildhorse Island became known as Mustang Island and "Tarpon" was later renamed to "Port Aransas".
